Thailand Health Insurance Deductibles

Thailand health insurance plans will typically offer the policyholder a variety of deductible options.

A comprehensive Thailand medical insurance plan will generally provide the policyholder with high coverage levels which typically ensure that all medical expenses will be covered by the plan. If you decide to add a deductible option to your plan, you will then be required to contribute a pre-agreed amount to the total cost of your medical expenses.

A simple example can help explain what a deductible option is and how it works. You have just purchased a Thailand health insurance policy with a US$200 deductible included. In the event that you require medical treatment that comes to a total of $450, then your insurance company will pay US$250 towards the cost of treatment whereas you will be required to pay the value of your deductible i.e. US$200.

As with most coverage options, the deductible options ultimately available to you will depend on your health insurance provider. Before you decide to purchase a medical insurance plan, we strongly advise you to make some enquiries and find out what deductible options are available with that policy.

One advantage of agreeing to include a deductible option with a Thailand medical insurance plan is the significant savings that can be made on the amount of your premium. Should you decide to include a deductible with your plan, your plan premium will often be significantly lower than would have been possible without the inclusion of the deductible.

Types of Thailand Health Insurance Deductibles

As previously mentioned, a wide range of deductible options are typically available with a Thailand health insurance policy and outlined below are some of the options that are generally on offer:

Co-Insurance and Co-Pays

This type of deductible requires the policyholder to pay a pre-determined percentage towards the cost of medical treatment and this option is commonly available with maternity and dental health insurance options.

Say you have agreed to have a 25% co-insurance deductible applied to your Thailand health insurance plan. Under the terms of the deductible, you are liable to pay 25% of the total cost of any treatment you may receive; the 25% co-insurance deductible comes into effect each time you receive treatment under the plan.

Per Condition Deductibles

Under this option, the policyholder is liable to pay the agreed deductible amount each time treatment has been received for a particular condition.

For example, you decide to purchase a Thailand health insurance plan with a US$100 per condition deductible. You suffer an illness which requires medical treatment, the total cost of which comes to US$300. As per the conditions of the deductible, you contribute US$100 towards this cost while your medical insurance provider settles the outstanding balance of US$200. In the event that subsequent or additional treatment of the condition is necessary, your insurance provider is liable for these charges as they are related to the initial condition. The deductible of US$100 will apply should you receive treatment for a separate, non-related illness.al treatment, the total cost of which comes to US$300. As per the conditions of the deductible, you contribute US$100 towards this cost while your medical insurance provider settles the outstanding balance of US$200. In the event that subsequent or additional treatment of the condition is necessary, your insurance provider is liable for these charges as they are related to the initial condition. The deductible of US$100 will apply should you receive treatment for a separate, non-related illness.

Per Year Deductible

Within each year of the policy, this deductible requires you to pay for treatment up to a set amount, after which the insurance company will cover the costs of further medical treatment.

An example of a per year deductible might be that you agree to a US$75 deductible with your Thailand medical insurance policy. As soon as your medical costs that are related to treatment covered under your plan reach more than US$75, after which your insurance plan will cover any further costs of treatment that policy year. This will hold true whether there were multiple treatments with low costs that eventually surpassed the deductible limit or if it was one treatment that exceeded the per year deductible.

Thailand Health Insurance Deductible Information

It is important to keep in mind that deductibles are typically per person, meaning that each individual on the policy, whether for group or individual Thailand health insurance plans, will have to meet the obligations of the selected deductible on their own and cannot count other members’ treatment towards their own deductible.
