Thailand Medical Costs

In 2002, Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health, on the back of strong and sustained economic growth, began redeveloping the national health system. A number of reforms were introduced and acted upon, resulting in an improved standard of health care being available throughout the country.

At present, there are an estimated 400 hospitals capable of providing advanced medical care and services that would be comparable to international standards. A majority of these facilities are privately owned or operate within the private sector. With the rise in healthcare standards came an increase in the number of expatriates and foreign nationals traveling to Thailand each year for the sole purpose of receiving medical treatment. A number of Thailand’s top hospitals and medical facilities have received the JCI (Joint Commission International) accreditation and many of their staffs are professionals who will have trained or worked in countries with high standards of health care such as Singapore, Hong Kong and the United States.

Thailand is now the leading destination in Asia for medical tourism and among the primary reasons for Thailand’s rise in popularity is the low cost of medical treatment. Treatment costs are only a fraction of those for similar treatment in a Western or more advanced country. In some cases, the difference in cost may be as high as 50 percent.

Some of the medical treatments offered at Thailand’s private hospitals which may be available at costs significantly lower than those in more developed countries include: dental procedures, medical check-up programs, cosmetic surgery, cardiac procedures, eye surgery, orthopedic surgery and infertility treatment.
